It had 10-rds non-detachable magazine loaded with standard Mauser 5-rds clips. Cocking handle could be twisted to hold moving assembly in rear after it was stopped by magazine follower after last round was fired - before reloading. Bolt carrier rigidly connected with op rod and piston. It had tilting bolt and locking stop in rear surface of loading/ejecting opening on top of receiver. The weapon was gas operated with gas chamber below barrel, return spring was in op rod, under barrel. The third and final winner was Józef Maroszek (the Maroszek, known best after wz.35 ATR) self loading rifle. 38M was standarised, seemingly especially for sniper weapon (which makes sense - no gas chmber/pipe to interfere with barrel vibration). Second one was Edward Stecke retarded blowback operated rifle (patented in several European countries and in US quoted quite commonly as a base for German roller bolt, which, if true at all, could not have been any direct, but could have been inspiration only), considered innovative enough to be still developed after wz. Almost no technical details are know, apart form information that it had gas chamber above barrel. SKS (no reasons to imagine any relation with Soviet weapon), which seemed most promising at first and substantial amount of money and time was invested before project was dropped.

The final attempt was March 1934 self loading rifle competition (600mm barrel, 4,5kg, 10-rds magazine, simplicity). One can guess that both of lack of experience and money caused returning to safer and cheaper tracks of bolt action rifles.
